Studies show that recruiters, on average, do not spend more than 7 seconds scanning a resume. So even if you have a great resume with great things tucked away inside it, chances are the recruiters will not pay any heed to it. However, there is a way to catch the recruiter’s attention and urge them to keep reading – Resume Headline. It is the best way to make your resume stand out from the rest of the pile.

A resume headline is a brief phrase that acts as the “title” to your resume. It describes you as a qualified candidate in just a few words that are enough to make the recruiters contact you. Since it is located at the top of the resume right after your name and contact number, it is one of the first things a recruiter will read on your resume. So take this opportunity to make your recruiter see what makes you the right person for the job.

Tips For Writing A Resume Headline

    • Capitalize: This one goes without saying but put your resume headline in a capitalized font. Since it acts as a title to your resume, capitalizing the resume headline is the perfect way to make it eye-catching.
    • Do not write cliché: The recruiters probably go through hundreds of resumes in a day. So they pretty much know all the cliche’s out there. So if you want to make your resume stand out, stay true to yourself and avoid putting things they will find in a hundred other resumes as well.
    • Keep it short: The resume headline is supposed to be concise yet catchy at the same time. Do not write a paragraph at the top of your resume.
    • Fresh headlines: Do not submit the same resume headline at every job. Try to make fresh headlines customized according to the job description.
    • Keywords: Add the correct keywords to your resume headline to make it perfect for the job you are applying for. For instance, you can take keywords from the job description and fit them into your headline. This will immediately grab the recruiter’s attention.
    • Achievements: Since the goal is to make your resume headline catchy, add a massive achievement in it. For example, “award-winning author” or “Salesman of the year at…”, etc. Moreover, you can add your years of experience as well. “Creative writer with 10+ years of experience”.
