Young Australians Choose Mobile Over Fixed Line

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has today released a new report titled Australian household consumers’ take-up and use of voice communication services.

The report supposedly confirms that… “young Australians are increasingly choosing not to connect a fixed line phone when moving out of their parental home, relying instead on mobile technology”

There are a couple of obvious reasons behind such statistics with one of the obvious reasons being people not wanting to opt-in to long term contracts with fixed-line telecommunication companies. Other obvious reasons include people in the age bracket of 18-34 (figure 3) renting homes on a short-term basis and wanting to be more mobile when moving on to their next rental home.

Not a huge surprise considering the latest available technologies with companies like Virgin who are offering 3G solutions that bundle an Internet and phone solution in the one box.

Most mobile companies these days are also offering two solutions: Post-paid and pre-paid. With such flexibility and no need for a contract on pre-paid, you can imagine the flexibility of choosing mobile over a  fixed-line solution.

You may also be wondering about ADSL as well, but with Internet Service Providers like iiNet offering Naked DSL, and 3G Broadband becoming more affordable, no need for line rental is needed.

“It [the report] indicates that while 90 per cent of consumers use both mobile and fixed line phones to stay in touch, many Australians aged 18 to 24 are abandoning the traditional phone in favour of more flexible technology”

‘The report’s findings nonetheless underscore the on-going importance of the traditional phone service to the lives of older Australians, even with the high rate of mobile phone use,’ said Chris Chapman, ACMA Chairman.
