TiVO Too Late For Australia?

Axel Bruns has an interesting piece up at Snurb pointing out that the time of DVRs such as TiVo may have already passed.
Noting that downloaded and online content through bittorrent and dedicated online sources such as Current.tv are becoming more convenient than time-shifted video, he points to a study by Solutions Research Group that notes that

Online viewing of TV is higher among 18-34 year olds – 70% have watched TV online at some point in the past. In comparison, only 36% ever viewed a show on a DVR or a TiVo.
Hulu has significantly increased its awareness, with 24% saying they have heard of the website.

The inclusion of Hulu is interesting – of all the video sharing sites it is the one with the most licensed, full length content available – but the majority of its content is geo-locked to the United States. There’s no alternative legal solution available in Australia yet – outside of using something like Hotspot shield to access Hulu directly.
Given the ease of finding pirated content online, the lack of legal options for online viewing and Australia’s woeful TV scheduling issues it’s no wonder we’re among the top pirates of TV content in the world. Suing iiNet isn’t going to change that.
