Another Breach of Australia’s Spam Act

2

THE Australian Communications and Media Authority has issued a formal warning to Hyarchis Company Limited (who run such services such as ezyfriends.net NSFW) for alleged breaches of the Spam Act 2003.

The type of spam was unsolicited SMS’ without consent of the recipient.

Under the Spam Act, potential penalties of up to $1.1 million per day may be imposed by the Federal Court for repeat offenders.

‘If you receive unwanted messages from unknown numbers that advertise a business or service, or invite you to sign up to a subscription, you could be getting spammed,’ said Lyn Maddock, Acting ACMA Chair. ‘Consumers should be aware that providing consent to receive messages from mobile premium service providers also amounts to giving permission to be billed for these services.’

Complaints can be made via the webform at ACMA’s anti-spam webpage www.spam.acma.gov.au.
