The Twitter We Want
![]()
The social micro-blogging Website Twitter has gotten more than its fair share of press over the length of its popularity, and seems to be one of the most popular places on the web for techlebrities, as it continues to be constantly plugged’ on Websites, Podcasts and now by genuine word of mouth.
The problem with this is, with most of its users who ‘get it’ and find it addictive, they are also being faced with incredibly frustrating (extended) downtime, and being relinquished of such features as IM and text messages of which have recently been taken away by Twitter.
I personally like Twitter a lot, especially when there is an event going on, as you can reply and comment on other tweets and almost feel as though you were there, at the event.
I personally use Twitter to contemplate and inform.
Twitter also has other quirks apart from it’s random downtime intervals, for example, it is very difficult to tack conversations and ‘threads’.
With some other sites such as Quotably trying to “bring order to Twitter”, unfortunately such services are tending to be terrible and inaccurate due to all these services having to watch Twitters Public Time line constantly.
Twitter has also had ground level issues to begin with.
For example:
1. If you are away from your computer (or chosen Twitter device) you are stuck.
2. If you go to sleep, you are also screwed.
Until they figure out a cure for sleeping, this is going to be a long term problem, as your favorite Tweeps overseas are going to tweet, and you will not see them in your average Twitter client.
It may not be Twitter’s problem, but because none of the Twitter clients support user lookups, it is not possible, but perhaps that is a limit of the API.
In the end, Twitter is an addictive service of which has gotten a lot of us hooked in already, and while there are many flaws, we over look them because of the warm, fuzzy, awesome Twitter moments when followers answer a question and reply back.
What features do you think would make Twitter a better service?

Reply system like Google’s “Jaiku” or Brightkite, that’s all.
Apart from no more downtime. It has been getting better, mind you. 99.88% is pretty good…. pretty, good.
Oh, and an email updates system. So I can email-in my updates while at school, which blocks twiter.com for being a “DatingService” *shrugs*
