I’ve just tried following the instructions, but when I get to the payment page there is no “none” option.
Just Visa, Master, Amex, Dicover and Paypal.
I have itunes 8.0.2.20

Suppose I have a Paypal account, and the address on it says I’m from Canada; can I still get a US paypal account using a different address? The iTunes store for canada doesn’t allow Paypal payments, which sucks.
I’m guessing not, but any experiences would help.

for those who encountered problems (especially like deadzone):
i had a similar problem, finally worked it out and wanted to share my solution:
in the verification e-mail there is a link like:
https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/verifyAccountEmail?
evcode=XXXXXXXXXXXXXhttps://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/acc
ountVerify?evc=XXXXXXXXXXXXX
if you examine it carefully, you will see that the link seems to consist of 2 parts, each starting with https. delete the second part starting with https://phobos.apple.com…; the result should look like this:
https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/verifyAccountEmail?
evcode=XXXXXXXXXXXXX
paste it into your browser’s address bar and hit enter. if your verification email was sent a while ago, it is probable that it’s expired, if so, create the account (or a new one) again. also a final note: the verification link opens your itunes and on computers with windows operating systems, there could be some issues. if this is the situation, please consider to verify your email (clicking the above explained link) on a mac with itunes installed. after you complete your account activation on the mac (probably belonging to another person) don’t forget to sign out.

Got it installed in iTunes but says it won’t put it on my iPhone because “you are not authorized for it in this computer”
For Windows users: use Safari to authenticate (did not work with Firefox)

Managed to set up the account but was given this prompt when I tried to sync my iphone:
“The application ‘Skype’ was not installed on the iphone ‘John Kenyon’s iphone’ because you are not authorized for it on this computer”

Open itunes and sign in to the itunes store you loaded Skype from.
Click Store in the toolbar at the top of the screen (not in the itunes window).
Click Authorize Computer
Now sync your iphone.
Enjoy.
