Telstra F**k off and STFU!

Yesterday Telstra, (Australia’s largest Telecommunications Company) told the Rudd Government to stop “dithering” according to The Australian over the upcoming National Broadband Network.

“By this continued delay and dithering about making a decision on the national broadband plan, we’re sacrificing $200 to $350 million a month,” Dr Burgess said.

“We ought to be out there digging holes, laying cable, connecting people.”

“There’s no excuse for that.

The Australian has told it’s readers that Dr Burgess has

“Commissioned a fresh study to examine the impact the network was likely to have on productivity, employment and GDP.”

To all of this I firstly say to Telstra stop bloody whinging.

Secondly, how the hell are Telstra managing to ‘sacrifice’ “$200 to $350 million a month” by not having such a network in place, when they do not know the take up rate of what such a network would be for sure.

And thirdly: Telstra, you haven’t won the NBN, and the whole “We ought to be out there digging holes, laying cable, connecting people.” is not “we” yet.

    Ok… where to begin…

Firstly, if you want your post to be recognized, perhaps its best to offer more constructive criticism than just be one of the crowd by Telstra bashing…

Secondly, I believe in disclosure so here goes… i am a Telstra shareholder.. [Editors note: Also an employee of Telstra]

Now… Telstra is NOT whining, its a piece of social commentary that they have produced because the government has NOT delivered a promise within a given timeline.. The reason for the statement is not one of greed, its one of frustration.

Your second point is totally and utterly incorrect. TELSTRA are not sacrificing 200 to 350Mn, throughout this release Telstra refers to Australia as a collective “we”.

So yes.. WE (Australians) are sacrificing 200 to 350Mn a month.. the figure is easy to work out. the size of the government tender divided by the time to build the network.

During a time of economic slow down such an investment in the economy can stabilize or lift it. As a classic economist this is a resounding notion. I recommend checking out distribution of wealth and Adam Smiths Invisible hand..

This release is a sign of increasing frustration with the Rudd Govt and the timeliness of such an investment to assist to recover from this slow down.

“Take Up Of Network” as you stated above has – nothing – to do with anything referred to in that release. you have misconstrued the point being made. the point being made was what i touched on above.

I too am frustrated with this tender process and its botched process. stalling by the G8, G9, or is the Terria group now (they dont know what they represent, they need to keep changing identities) isnt helping one iota.. rather than Telstra bashing perhaps they too should submit a sound build plan rather than ask for inside info from competitors..

The performance of the Optus network in the last few weeks would scare the SHIT out of me if they won this tender…

I would much prefer the G9 group get the tender.. I’d rather trust a handful of varied companies some of whom I trust (Internode, iiNet etc) than putting everything into the hands of telstra, who have already proven they are unwilling to do anything major to improve the Australian broadband economies.

Look to someone like http://www.pipenetworks.com who are investing their own money in providing a new Fibre link overseas for Australia.

I hope you’ve got a way out of those Telstra shares.. cos I expect broadband prices to drop as soon as this new link is available to us all.
